Wish Upon [Movie Review]

I didn't know about the movie until I saw the trailer a few weeks back. It got me intrigued and looking forward to watching it in cinema.

Be careful what you wish for

I watch a horror movie to release the steam off from work - screaming does that to me. Haha.

Clare watched her mom hanged herself and she grew up haunted by the incident. Growing up with her junk-collector father didn't help her much with her social inadaptability and awkwardness. She became the subject of ridicule of her peers at school.

When her father brought home an odd looking music box engraved with ancient chinese characters on it, her life started to change. As Clare was learning Mandarin in school, she managed to translate a few words that literally means 'seven wishes'. Jokingly, Clare wished that her arch-enemy and the most mean girl in school, Darcie to 'rot'. During midnight, the music box opened up and played some music before it closes again. 
Darcie woke up with a severe skin-eating disease that she has to be hospitalised to treat her condition. Dismissing the incident as a mere coincident, Clare wished more wishes until she realised that for every wish granted, a person that is dear to her will lose his/ her life.

Why are we all looking so intensely at the bottom of the box? Are we trying to guess its gender?

Her long-time secret admirer and classmate, Ryan, happens to be of Chinese ethnicity and has a cousin that studies about ancient Chinese characters. Ryan learnt about the horrible truth of the music box from his cousin, who ended up dead too after Clare's wish was granted.
Ryan tried to put the wishing-spree to stop but Clare was reluctant as she was living the life that she has always dreamt off - wealthy, popular and loved.

Girl, you can buy everything in the store, but you couldn't buy class and that's what you are lacking now!

Will the wishing-spree and killing end?

Plot: 2.3/ 5.0. The plot of the movie is somehow predictable until a twist was thrown at the end of the movie. I think the movie could do much better if it were directed by someone else. It is not entirely a disaster, but there is a lot of room for improvement for a better horror movie.
Cast: 3.0/5.0. Oh My Gawd! Ryan Phillippe could do much better. He played the character of a mourning husband and dad quite poorly. Joey King did just fine, not great. Whereas the others are quite good in their character. I do not know why but I think Alice Lee (Gina aka Ryan's cousin) did a great job here.
Will I watch it again: That depends on the emotional turmoil that I am in at that moment. If it is bad, then I would, just to release the tension. I would say, watch it with an open mind and do not expect too much.
