Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the intellect for which a monopoly is assigned to designated owners by law. Intellectual property rights (IPRs) are the rights granted to the creators of IP and include trademarks, copyright, patents, industrial design rights, and in some jurisdictions trade secrets. Artistic works including music and literature, as well as discoveries, inventions, words, phrases, symbols, and designs, can all be protected as intellectual property.
While intellectual property law has evolved over centuries, it was not until the 19th century that the term intellectual property began to be used, and not until the late 20th century that it became commonplace in the majority of the world.

- MyIPO is an agency under the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operative and Consumerism and prior to 1983, the intellectual property rights were administered by Pejabat Cap Dagangan dan Jaminhak before changing its name to Pejabat Cap Dagangan dan Paten and placed under the jurisdiction of the then Ministry of Trade and Industry.
- After a restructuring on 27 October 2990, the office changed its name to Intellectual Property Division and placed under the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (which is now Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operative and Consumerism). The division was tasked to administer Patents Act 1983, Trade Marks Act 1976 and Copyright Act 1987.
- Some acts that come under the jurisdiction of MyIPO [Industrial Designs Act 1996 | Layout-Designs of Integrated Circuits Act 2000 | Geographical Indications Act 2000]
- The Division was corporatized on 3 March 2003 and renamed as Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (PHIM) before rebranded to MyIPO on 3 March 2005.
So, what kind of services do MyIPO offers to the mass?
Lots and lots and in such simple steps, your creative inventions will be secured and protected.
Hurm. I think now I want to also register #RawlinsGLAM as my intellectual property so that I will be the only one using it since I have been using the hashtag for like... forever for all my social media sharing.
As more and more entrepreneurs coming up, MyIPO is the best solution to protect all their creative inventions and by doing so, it will save them a lot of troubles when someone is claiming their rights over the inventions or manipulating their design to gain profits. As it is also MyIPO's mission to providing strong legal infrastructure and effective administration regime to enhance greater creativity and exploitation of intellectual property.
We all know that the court processes might take a while and a lot of cash, so it is the best for all innovators/ creators/ business developers/ entrepreneurs to register their business on the website to avoid the costly affairs.
