- It was officially opened on August 28, 1957, in conjunction with Malaysia's Independence Day celebration. It is the only Chinese restaurant that has housed many VIPs, dignitaries and Diplomats, who arrived in Kuala Lumpur to witness Malaysia to celebrate her independence on August 31, 1957.
- The Mandarin Palace was the location for filming the blockbuster movie The Seventh Dawn directed by Lewis Gilbert starring William Holden, Capucine, Susannah York, Michael Goodliffe and Tetsura Tamba, which was released in 1964.
- The Mandarin Palace was listed as one of Malaysia's Most Beautiful Restaurants in Flavours Magazine May - June 2007, Malaysia Edition. It is also a recipient of Malaysia's tatler for Malaysia Best Restaurants in 1997, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. The Mandarin Palace also received the C.E.M. Asia Award for Malaysia Best Restaurants Award in 1977.
As I entered the hallway leading to the Mandarin Palace, I was fascinated with the carvings, the paintings and the decoration along the aisle. As I read the quotes on the pictures, I realised that all the carvings of auspicious dragons, phoenix, birds, animals, lotus flowers, God, Goddess and other Chinese characters are all of originals parts and as antique as the restaurant.
And as I entered the restaurant, it seems like I was walking into an Emperor's Hall - feeling so majestic, luxurious and grand as one too.
Then I saw the royal feast - the dim sums!
Oh my! And there is a lot of choices too!
The Mandarin Palace offers an exciting menu ranging from Cantonese to Hunanese and Szechuan cuisines, served in the grandeur of imperial court setting and warm Malaysian hospitality. There is Shrimp Dumpling, Teochew Dumpling, Xiao Long Bao, Shaomai and many more! I have tested them all and all I can offer you know is to feast your eyes on the pictures of that delicious food.
Delicious would be an understatement for all these delicious dim sums.
My friends and I just keep on coming back to the counter to get more.
Mahamahu was especially fixated on the salted egg bao.
Hehehe.
