Mulan [Movie Review] | When I first heard about Mulan will be airing, I was so looking forward to the movie. Will it be exactly as the 1998 animation? Or will it be a totally new take of Mulan altogether?
Then the pandemic Covid-19 happened and the release was postponed for a later date. And it got released in September - there's no way in the whole wide world that I will not be watching my favourite animation on the widescreen!
SYNOPSIS
- Directed by: Niki Caro
- Produced by: Chris Bender, Jake Weiner, Jason T. Reed
- Production companies: Walt Disney Pictures, Jason T. Reed Productions, Good Fear Productions
- Distributed by: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
- Running time: 115 minutes
- Rating: PG13 (For the sequence of violence)
- The first Disney live-action remake to receive a PG13 rating.
- Yifei Liu performs 90% of her stunts as Mulan - horse riding, sword fighting, martial arts and battle scenes.
- Tony Bancroft (one of the directors of the original animated film) is delighted the remake isn't a carbon copy (in contrast to The Lion King which he disowned).
- To make the film more historically correct, the enemy invader is now the Rouran instead of the Huns.
- Did you know/ realize that the Emperor is actually Jet Li?
- Jet Li actually turned down the script but later accepted the script when his daughters reminded him that it was important for Disney to shine a light on Chinese culture.
- Due to Covid 19, there was no US release, instead the film will be premiered on Disney+.
- Ming-Na Wen, the original animated voice of Mulan, has a cameo in the film.
- Budget: $200 million
- Box-Office: $49.5million
- Tomatometer: 79%
- Metascore: 68
- IMDb: 5.6/10
Mulan has always been an active girl since she was small - the one that will be running around chasing poultries while her little sister stays in the room, helping their mother with house chores. Her mother fears that no one will marry her when she grows older but her father thinks nothing of her active behaviour.
China is facing attacks from Northern invaders, the Rourans. The Rourans attacks villages and the attacks move nearer to the Imperial City. Bori Khan is advancing fast with his army to the Imperial City, in hopes to take revenge on his father's death. He is being assisted by Xian Lang, a witch. The whole country is preparing an army to stop the attack.
When she is of age, her mother brings her to see the matchmaker but it was disastrous. Then comes a decree from the Emperor that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from the attack. Mulan's father insisted that he will serving even though he is ailing.
Mulan not wanting her father to serve in his ailing state runs that night and start masquerading as Hua Jun. Over time, Hua Jun becomes an exemplary soldier to the others.
Will Mulan brings honor to her family and the country?
MY REVIEW
Plot: 4.8/ 5.0 No comment whatsoever about the plot. I understand the story, I love the movie and that's about it! The fighting scenes are beautifully choreographed and the wardrobes - Xian Lang's has the best dresses!
Cast: 4.9/ 5.0 A great cast choice. And it wasn't for my friend's sharing, I wouldn't know that Jet Li was the Emperor! Again - good job all actors! I love that Bori Khan looks exactly like the villain in the animated version!
Will I watch it again: YES AND YES AND YES

Mulan oh Mulan. Such a nice movie especially it is an animation-go-live movie. Interesting story line even we already know what's going to happen based on the animation story we watched back in our childhood time. :)
