- 'Unobtainium is a term used for an extremely rare, not yet discovered, or physically impossible substance necessary for a given task.
- Aaron Eckhart took the role because he wanted a good paycheck after the 9/11.
- Originally slated for release on 1 November 2002, the film was pushed back five months to give the visual effects crew more time to perfect the CGI scenes.
The movie started with a few weird incidents happening around the world. People with pace-makers suddenly drop dead and birds flying mindlessly - as seems lost their sense of direction.
Due to that, the government decided to gather all the greatest minds and capable skill personnel to investigate the cause of the incidents and then they concluded that the Earth's molten core has stopped rotating thus causes the Earth's magnetic core to go haywire. The minds concluded that the core has to be restarted and the only way is to go into the core and restart the rotation. Unless it can be restarted, the magnetic field will collapse within months, exposing the surface to devastating solar radiation.
Dr. Ed has developed a material 'Unobtanium' that can withstand and convert the pressure of the core into energy, as well as a laser-based high-speed drilling array. The US government backs building a vessel, Virgil, that can drill to the core and release nuclear weapons to restart the rotation. Commander Robert and Major Rebecca are enlisted to pilot the Virgil. They also enlisted Donald 'The Rat', a computer hacker to keep news of the pending disaster from the internet.
Virgil launches through the Marianas Trench and successfully makes its way through the crust. At some points, they realised that some layers of the Earth as not as what has been thought. Some layers were totally empty and they didn't anticipate that.
A few members died along the way and when they finally made it into the core, they realised that the weapons that they have brought might not be enough to start the rotation. When they told the surface operations on the matter, the team was told to return to the surface as they will be using Plan B to start the rotation - DESTINI. DESTINI was actually the weapon that caused the core to stop rotating when it was first tested. And now they want to use it again to restart the rotation.
Which one will succeed in its mission - VIRGIL or DESTINI? Will the Earth survive?
MY REVIEW
Plot: 4.3/ 5.0 I am loving the plot of the movie. The scenes where the crew realised that they have miscalculated the density for each Earth's layer and discovered it the hard way - that was great!
Cast: 4.6/ 5.0 They delivered. The younger Aaron, Hillary and Stanley were so beautiful then!
Will I watch it again: Yes. I'm ok. I might use this movie as a science class reference to my kids. Hehe
The pictures are taken from multiple sources on the Internet. Thank you.
