Just like the usual Cinderella story, the story starts in a village in a peaceful kingdom. Ella is living with her stepmother, Vivian and her stepsisters, Malvolia and Narissa. The sisters call her Cinderella as there will always be a hint of cinder on her face, after she cleaned the whole house and served them
Ella has been dreaming of opening up her own shop 'Dresses by Ella' where she will sell her garments, but during that era, women are only expected to stay at home, get married and man the household, no more.
Prince Robert catches the sight of Ella during the guard-changing ceremony and decides to look for her at the market. Ella was there trying to sell her dress, to which the whole marketplace laughs at the idea of a businesswoman. Prince Robert, who dresses as a commoner, buys the dress from Ella and invites her to a ball where he'll introduce her to rich people to sell her dresses to.
The Vivian's household is excited that the Prince will be choosing his bride during the ball. The fact is, Prince Robert is forced by his father to get married and expand the kingdom. Prince Robert is not about ruling the kingdom, but his sister, Princess Gwen is. Their father insists on Robert ruling the kingdom, and their mother, the Queen, is actually against the idea but finds her voice is not being heard at all.
As the household dressing up for the ball, so is Ella. When she shows Vivian her dress, Vivian throws ink on her dress and tells her that only her stepsisters can attend as eligible candidates and Ella is no longer eligible as she is promised to Thomas, the vegetable merchant.
The sad Ella cries when the girls left. Her Fairy Godmother magically appears and helps her with her dresses and transportation to bring her to the palace. But she has to be back before the clock trikes midnight.
Ella was having the time of her life at the ball. She meets a visiting Queen who likes her dress and offers to take her around the world as her dressmaker. Then she discovers that Robert is actually the Prince that is looking for a bride. They talked and got to know each other a little better. Princess Gwen wears the dress that Prince Robert bought at the market. When Robert proposes to Ella, she refuses as she needs to focus on her career.
The clock strikes midnight, Ella runs from the Prince and the guards that was after her. She throws one of her glass heels towards the guards to stop them from pursuing her and she jumps into her magical carriage. Halfway home, the magic wears off and Ella picks up and returns home.
We all know the rest of the story. The King instructs the guards to look for the owner of the glass heels. Every maiden in the kingdom tries.
The twist in this one, Vivian knows that Ella is the maiden that the palace is looking for. She tells Ella to come forward with her truth and marry the prince. Ella refuses as she wants to pursue her career.
The angry Vivian grabs and rides to see Thomas to give Ella to Thomas' hands.
So, will Ella be married to Thomas, instead to the Prince?
MY REVIEW
Plot: 4.5/ 5.0 The early part of the movie is similar to any Cinderella stories. The plot changes when the Godmother appears and Ella is not the same damsel in distress as in any other Cinderella stories.
Is there a happy ever after? There is but nothing like what we have always heard/ read before.
I love the songs in the movie - the arrangement and the dance were magnificent.
Cast: 4.3/ 5.0 It's a musical so most are singing and dancing.
Could a totally different cast brings a greater performance? Ye, probably. But this one delivers too.
Will I Watch It Again: Yes, I would.
The pictures are taken from multiple sources on the Internet. Thank you.
