Rema is to 'Calm Down' with Selena Gomez | As a Selena Gomez fan (both her singing and now her acting when she stars in Only Murders in the Building), I was excited to read about the success story of Rema.
Rave & Roses
Still basking in the incredible success of his debut album, Rave & Roses , Afrorave trailblazer Rema releases the new version of his album track "Calm Down," featuring Grammy and Emmy nominated Selena Gomez in her debut to the Afrobeat scene alongside an accompanying lyric video.
Upon release, Rave & Roses went on to achieve No.1 in over sixteen countries, A-List at BBC1xtra, went Top 10 in Billboard’s World Music chart, Top 10 in Apple Music & Shazam charts week of release as well as making history as the highest-charting debut Afrobeats album in Nigeria.
Rave & Roses spanned across 16-tracks and featured a handpicked selection of features including U.S singer Chris Brown, 6LACK, UK rapper AJ Tracey & French songstress Yseult. Coining a new sub-genre dubbed Afrorave, Rave & Roses is a masterclass in his range and musicality as he opens up and lets us explore his weird and wonderful universe. Rema is now taking the album on the road playing an extensive US tour including multiple sold out stops in Los Angeles and two nights at New York City's Irving Plaza among others, after performance sat the UK festivals Strawberries & Cream and Wireless this summer. Rema will also be hitting the road for UK and EU tours later this fall, including his debut London headline show.
Rema, the Afrobeats Star
Since his debut, Rema has come in and completely switched up the game, rapidly becoming one of the biggest and most internationally known names in the new wave of Afrobeats stars. The young pioneer stands out due to his ability to bounce between influences, citing African, Indian and Arabic music as having an integral impact on his sound. With co-signs from the likes of Timberland, Barack Obama, Rihanna, Drake, Skepta and FKA Twigs, Rema puts his own supernatural spin on everything he touches, with his debut album proving he is worthy of all the hype surrounding him.
Rema is a superstar already. Championed by no less than Barack Obama and Drake, his songs such as "Iron Man" and "Dumebi" have already changed the game forever. Continuously demonstrating wisdom way beyond his 21 years, Rema is paving the way for his generation with his mission statement of taking Afrobeats around the globe being central to everything he does.
To some, his success may appear to be overnight but his musical journey began as a young teen in the church. Rema, aka Divine Ikubor, was born and bred in Benin City and has risen to mainstream consciousness with his unmatched vocals, fusion of genres & ease at being unapologetically himself. Gracing the front covers of The Fader & Dazed & Confused in his career's infantry, he continues to add to his list of career highlights becoming one of Apple Music’s Up Next artists in 2020, joining the FIFA 2021 soundtrack, and catching the attention of Radio 1, 1Xtra and Kiss.
Rave & Roses gives us a glimpse into the story of Rema the superstar as he tries to navigate life, the fame, love and sex while creating a sonically pleasing and exciting experience.
