Ariel is the youngest daughter of King Triton. She is one mermaid princess that is fascinated, no - she is obsessed with the human world, despite her father's ruling of never going to the surface, especially after her mother was killed by a human.
So, she collects human objects that fell into the ocean with the support of her best friends, Flounder (a fish) and Scuttle (a bird).
One night, she sees fireworks above the surface, down from her secret cave and her curiosity gets the best of her. She swims to the surface to see it up close. The fireworks come from Prince Eric's ship - who wishes to explore the unknown. A storm rages on and the ship crashes against the rock, forcing all sailors to abandon the ship. Eric jumps last as he rescues his dog. Then the big waves splashes on him, pulling him deep into the ocean. Ariel comes to the rescue and brings him to shore, where she sings with her siren voice to save Eric. Ariel flees as Eric regains consciousness.
When Triton questions Sebastian, his advisor about Ariel's absent-minded behaviour, he was forced to tell about Ariel's adventure in saving Eric. Outrageous by Ariel's behaviour, Triton sees Ariel in her secret cave and starts destroying Ariel's collection.
Sadden by Triton's action, she follows a pair of eels when the they show her an image of Ursula, her aunt that was banished by her father. Ursula promises her that she can help Ariel with her longing for the surface world.
The deal is - Ursula will transform Ariel into a human for three days and if she manages to get a 'true love's kiss' from Eric before the sundown of the third day, she will remain human. If she fails, she will transform back into a mermaid and she will become Ursula's forever. To become human, she must give up her tail, her ability to breather underwater and her siren voice, the last which Ursula keep in her shell necklace.
Ariel agrees. The magic works and now Ariel is on land, with no voice. She is rescued by a fisherman and he brings her to Eric's kingdom. Upon hearing about Ariel's arrival, Eric rushes to see her, as he has been searching all over the kingdom for her rescuer. Upon learning that Ariel has no voice, Eric's search continues.
Unbeknownst to Ariel, Ursula has put a spell on her to make her forget that she needs to get a true kiss from Eric before the end of the third day.
Somehow, Eric and Ariel starts spending time together. Scuttle and Flounder helps to get the pair to kiss. Ursula learns about the assistance. Enraged, she transforms herself into a young woman named Vanessa and uses Ariel's voice to hypnotise Eric.
How can Ariel win Eric's love when she doesn't have the one thing that Eric remembers - her voice?
And will this film shares the tragic ending for Ariel?
