Rahsia [Movie Review] | I grew up admiring Noorkumalasari in films. I started watching, well to be exact, fearing her, after the movie Misteri rumah Tua. She was so scary yet very convincing at the same time.
I watched Rahsia too when it was released in 1987 and when I learnt that there's a reboot featuring Nabila Huda, of course I wanna watch it too.
Rahsia Gala Night
Earlier this week, I was invited to the Gala Night of Rahsia. Meaning, I will be among the first in Malaysia to watch Rahsia, the reboot. The tagline of the movie is #DiaTakkanPergi [She will never leave].
The best thing was the original cast of 1987's Rahsia also attended the Gala Night. That was a nice touch.
The director, Shamyl Othman, who takes on the mantle to recreate a masterpiece that is near and dear to him as he is the son to the director of the original film, Othman Hafsham.
Some of the elements and scenes from the original film are retained in this reboot, including the toy car that moves on its own, the piano that plays its own tune, the doll coming to life, the bungalow house, thrilling scenes by the beach, and the mystery behind the stone wall, all of which will surely excite fans and viewers of the original.
The original Rahsia created a phenomenon in 1987, with its mystery thriller storyline. It became the first local horror film to be crowned the Best Film at the 7th Malaysian Film Festival (FFM7), bagging seven awards in other categories, including Best Director.

The movie starts with news clips about a Tan Sri who jumped to his death, reason unknown. The wife, packs hurriedly at home and about to leave the home when their helpers run amok and kills other helpers. The wife hides in the closet but it seems that the ghoul manages to find her there too.
In the present day, Ramlah and Hamdan visits her father, Tan Sri Karim with their children, Marina and Saiful. Ramlah is still salty that her mother abandons her and Tan Sri Karim when she was younger but Tan Sri Karim tells her to forgive and forget. Tan Sri Karim belittles Hamdan who is just a lecturer at a small institute, but Ramlah loves her husband very much and ask him to ignore her father.
The family goes out for a picnic at the beach. Marina screams out when she finds a flock of birds dead on the beach. Saiful is nowhere to be found. As Ramlah looks up, she sees Saiful on top of a huge boulder by the sea, with a black figure approaching and hugging him from behind. When the parents arrive at the boulder, Saiful is nowhere in sight.
At the same time, Tan Sri Karim suffers a heart attack. The family returns to the mansion and makes a police report about Saiful.
Ramlah starts experiencing hearing voices of Saiful and seeing his shadows around the house. Hamdan does not believes that she's hearing voices - blaming it on her tiredness from not sleeping and worrying about Saiful and Tan Sri Karim.
Then she starts seeing ghost in the dark that resembles her mother. The ghost keeps on disturbing the family - Marina, Tan Sri Karim and Ramlah herself.
Why is the ghost haunting the family? Is there a secret about the house or the family that causes the disturbance?
MY REVIEW
Plot: 4.7/ 5.0 The character development builds up beautifully. The backstory backs up the whole story perfectly.
The scary scenes - a lot. Expect jumpscares too.
But the horrific torment and its toll on a human was depicted beautifully in the movie. It shows how a human deals with unbearable torments on her own, and takes it out on herself and everyone around her. I find myself close my eyes a few times throughout the movie.
Cast: 4.8/ 5.0 Nabila Huda, Eman Manan and Fikry Ibrahim was performing beautifully. Great cast!
Will I Watch It Again: Yes, I would!
