- It is a remake of Woo's 1989 Hong Kong film of the same name.
- Walter Hill and David Giler wrote a script for a remake of The Killer (1989) as far back as 1992. It was planned to have starred Richard Gere and Denzel Washington. Nicolas Cage wanted to star in the remake too.
- Lupita Nyong'o was initially cast as Zee, but due to production delays from the COVID-19 pandemic, she became unavailable. Nathalie Emmanuel was then cast to replace her.
Zee, a contract killer living in Paris, works for Finn, an Irishman connected to drug baron and the kingpin, Jules Gobert. Her job is to eliminate Gobert’s rivals in the drug trade. Over time, she’s known as "The Queen of the Dead", by criminals and police alike as she kills without anyone noticing.
Always living alone, Zee finds comfort in her friendship with an old tailor named Tessier, who provides her with disguises and beautiful garments for her jobs. She has a pet goldfish, loves solving crossword puzzles and always frequent a particular eatery as it serves the 'perfect food' to her liking.
On one job, Finn assigns Zee to take out a drug gang from Marseille partying in a local nightclub. Zee successfully eliminates the gangsters, but an innocent bystander, a young American singer named Jenn, is caught in the crossfire and ends up blinded. Jenn is brought to a nearby hospital and being treated there. When Finn finds out, he orders Zee to finish the job at the hospital where Jenn is being treated.
Meanwhile, police inspector Sey and his partner Jax are closing in on Jenn’s drug-dealing boyfriend, Coco. The situation escalates, and Coco takes a hostage, forcing Sey to kill him. At the time of his death, Coco was listening to a demo of one of Jenn’s songs, which leads Sey to investigate her.
Zee, disguised as a vice-consul from the US embassy, gains access to Jenn’s hospital room, ready to carry out her mission. Just as she’s about to strike, Sey arrives to take Jenn’s statement about the nightclub attack. Still traumatized, Jenn can’t remember much, which saves her life as Zee decides to abort the mission. However, Sey becomes suspicious of Zee’s presence.
Sey’s investigation into the nightclub killings is hindered by his superiors, who are worried about the political fallout, especially since some of the gangsters killed were corrupt cops working for Gobert.
As Sey digs deeper, he and Zee end up forming an unlikely alliance, while protecting Jenn. Together, they discover that Finn is orchestrating a scheme to take over the drug trade in Paris.
Can the unlikely trio survive the dangerous threats, all aiming for their lives?
