The Deliverance [Movie Review]

The Deliverance [Movie Review] | Out of nowhere, The Deliverance drops on Netflix. And I watched it with no expectation whatsoever. And I love to watch Glenn Close in a horror movie.

Ebony, a mother of three—teen son Nate, pre-teen daughter Shante, and young son Dre—has recently moved into a new home, the third in a short period. Joining them is Ebony's elderly mother, Alberta, who is battling cancer. Unknown to Alberta, her insurance no longer covers her treatment, so Ebony has been paying out of pocket to keep her in care. This financial strain has left Ebony in debt, leading to collections.

Ebony has a troubled past, including a prison sentence and a history of alcohol abuse, which often leads to physical violence towards her children. Child Protective Services (CPS) has intervened, assigning caseworker Cynthia to monitor the family. Their relationship with Cynthia is strained at best.

Dre begins talking about an unseen presence named Tre, who he claims lives in their basement and closet. Dead animals appear in the basement, where there's a large hole in the concrete floor. On several occasions, Dre has been found catatonic after going into the basement. Shante and Nate also start behaving strangely. One night, a drunk Ebony hears noises from the children's room. Alberta discovers a large hole in the wall and Ebony with a baseball bat, though Ebony denies any wrongdoing.

Cynthia, after losing track of the family, confronts Ebony about the children’s bruises, but they all deny Ebony's involvement. Meanwhile, a mysterious woman is seen watching the house. The children experience unexplained psychiatric episodes at school, leading to hospitalization, but doctors find nothing wrong.

The mysterious woman, claiming to be a pastor, warns Ebony of a demonic presence that once drove a mother in the house to murder her family. Skeptical, Ebony returns home to find Alberta dead, apparently killed by Dre. The children are taken by CPS, and Ebony undergoes psychiatric evaluation, but Cynthia prevents her hospitalization.

Can Ebony saves her family from being haunted by the demon?
