- A character mentions an airborne virus in Hunan, China, which eerily mirrors the COVID-19 outbreak reported a year after the film was made.
Charlotte Willmore, a gifted cellist, left a prestigious Boston music school, Bachoff, to care for her ailing mother. After her mother’s death, Charlotte reconnects with Anton, the school’s head, who invites her to Shanghai to help select a new student. There, Charlotte befriends Elizabeth Wells, Bachoff’s star pupil and her replacement. After a night of partying, they sleep together.
The next morning, Charlotte gives Lizzie ibuprofen for her hangover, and the two embark on a trip through rural China. As Elizabeth falls ill and takes more of Charlotte's ibuprofen, she begins hallucinating bugs under her skin. In her panic, Charlotte hands Lizzie a meat cleaver, and Lizzie, desperate, chops off her own hand. It's soon revealed that Charlotte drugged Lizzie, using her late mother’s medication to induce the hallucinations and orchestrating the entire event.
Weeks later, Lizzie returns to Bachoff, missing her right hand, and accuses Charlotte of sabotage out of jealousy. Anton, the head of the school, dismisses her and expels Lizzie. Determined for answers, Lizzie tracks down Charlotte and tasers her, dragging her back to Bachoff. Charlotte reveals that she planned everything to save Lizzie from Anton's abusive sex cult, which she herself endured for years.
Anton forces Charlotte to perform in the Chapel, threatening that any mistake will lead to new student Zhang Li being harmed.
Can Charlotte stops the abuse?
