  • Originally titled Kiblat, the film faced backlash for allegedly misusing a term sacred in Islam. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) even intervened, advising a title change to avoid misunderstandings. In the end, the horror film hit theaters without needing reshoots, adopting the title Thaghut. The term Thaghut itself means "crossing boundaries" and in a religious context can imply straying beyond the bounds of faith into misguidance.

The movie starts with the tragic and gruesome death of Abah Mulya. He was decapitated.

Prior to the death, the movie shows Ainun, a young girl who deeply admires Abah Mulya for his strength and reputation as a healer who helps those in need. She always tries to emulate whatever Abah's action was - she aims to be a healer just like Abah.

Abah’s fame grows with media coverage, but Ainun's devotion doesn’t sit well with her caretaker, Uwa, who raised her after her mother passed away.

The news of Abah's death is shown on national TV. This shocking event leads Ainun to discover that Abah was, in fact, her biological father, a truth Uwa had concealed as per her mother’s wishes. Determined to visit and pay her respect, she travels to Abah Mulya's village, along with her best friends, Bagas and Rini.

But soon, she finds herself drawn into a sinister legacy left behind by Lingga, who has taken up Abah's teachings with a dark twist. Ajeng, Abah’s third wife and Ainun’s brother Rahmat warn her about Abah’s dangerous beliefs, but Ainun dismisses their concerns.

The longer the trio stays at the village, the deeper and the darker they learn about Abah's teachings.

Will Ainun embraces Abah's teaching and her root?

  • Beautiful and convincing cast.
  • I think that movies has become another approach of dakwah too.

What I Don't Like:

  • Too fast/ too short?
  • Abah Mulya's corpse looks too doll-like.

Will I Watch It Again: Yes, I would.

Overall: 4.5/ 5.0
