A cargo ship from Universal Dynamics loses six all-purpose ROZZUM robots in a storm, and one unit, Roz, washes up on an uninhabited island. Accidentally activated by the island's wildlife, Roz tries to help the animals, but they fear her. She injures herself while attempting to signal for help, and in an accident with a bear, she crushes a goose nest, leaving only one egg. When the gosling hatches, it imprints on her as its mother, breaking Roz’s long-range transponder. Guided by Pinktail, an opossum, Roz learns how to care for the gosling, whom she names Brightbill.

As Brightbill matures, he meets other geese who mock his bond with Roz, calling her the monster that killed his mother. Upset, he disowns Roz and leaves. Heartbroken but determined, Roz seeks advice from other animals, including Thunderbolt the falcon and Longneck, the elderly goose leader. She learns to guide Brightbill, who eventually flies away with the other geese for winter migration.

During the winter, Roz shelters the island animals, forming an unlikely peace among predators and prey.

When spring arrives, Brightbill and the geese arrive on the island, hailing him as a hero. But Roz’s signal draws Universal Dynamics, who send a retrieval robot, Vontra, to capture her. The island animals, led by Brightbill, defend Roz from Vontra’s RECO robots, but Vontra shuts Roz down and wipes her memories.

Will love eventually conquers all?
