The Walker family of Los Angeles is a bustling household of five has always been at odds.
Jess and Bill, the hardworking parents, and their three kids, CC, Wyatt, and little Miles, couldn’t seem more different. As Christmas approaches, Jess and Bill make it their mission to pull their emotionally distant kids closer for some quality family time. Their Christmas tradition of making a Christmas video together doesn't interest their kids anymore.
CC, their eldest is a popular kid at school and always seems too focused on her football. Wyatt is a genius kid. aiming to enter Yale at a very young age but very shy at school and get bullied too.
Their efforts, however, hit a snag during a trip to the Griffith Observatory to witness a rare planetary alignment. Tensions boil over, and amid a heated argument, both parents and kids wish for a chance to truly understand each other. As if on cue, a mysterious flash from the telescope leaves everyone dazed—and inadvertently breaks the device.
The next morning, chaos reigns. Jess and her teenage daughter CC wake up in each other’s bodies, as do Bill and their son Wyatt. Even toddler Miles and the family dog, Pickles, aren’t spared. Horrified and desperate to fix the bizarre situation, the Walkers enlist their quirky neighbor Rolf to babysit while they scramble to the observatory. Their only hope? Repairing the telescope before the planetary alignment ends. The thing is, today is the biggest day in everyone's lives - CC has a big football tournament and her hope to get elected to play for national, Wyatt's Yale interview, Jess' big presentation to a huge client that will determine whether she make partner and Bill's band performance.
But life in each other’s shoes isn’t easy. CC takes on her mom’s big work presentation, only to be betrayed by her mom's lactose intolerance, causing an embarrassing, gassy disaster. Meanwhile, Jess sabotages her daughter's crucial soccer match, prioritizing kindness over competition in front of a national recruiter. Wyatt botches his son’s Yale interview with a laid-back attitude, while Bill fumbles through teenage life, awkwardly navigating a party hosted by Wyatt's crush, Ariana.
Despite their best efforts, the telescope is missing a vital lens, and next alignment isn’t until 2162. Frustrated but united, the family rallies to salvage what they can. They even share a heartfelt moment singing together at Bill’s music concert. Through these misadventures, they gain insight into each other’s struggles—Jess learns the depth of her daughter’s soccer dreams, Wyatt sees his dad’s sacrifices, and CC understands her mother’s work-life balance.
Eventually, with a last-minute save from Miles, the telescope is fixed. But still nothing changes.
What will revert the changes?
