Abah Saya, Uncle Mike: Bridging Cultures Through Film | I think Malaysians remember a beautiful story about Uncle Mike, a Chinese Malaysian, who adopted and raised three Muslim siblings since 2008. The story tugs so many hearts and now inspires a movie.
For the first time in 27 years, Chinese New Year and Hari Raya fall close together, and Astro Shaw, in partnership with Etika Sdn. Bhd., is celebrating this unique moment with a heartwarming film, Abah Saya, Uncle Mike. Inspired by a true story, the film highlights Malaysia’s multicultural spirit and the strength of family bonds.
The story follows Uncle Mike, a Chinese man who selflessly raised three adopted Malay sons while respecting their Muslim faith. His love and dedication touched hearts nationwide, earning him the Maulidur Rasul Award 2024 from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. This rare alignment of festivals deepens the film’s message of unity and shared values.
Astro Shaw and Etika’s collaboration is groundbreaking, extending the film’s themes through festive trailers. These short stories capture Malaysian diversity—children celebrating Chinese New Year, Uncle Mike joining Hari Raya, and the unifying joy of both festivals.
The movie stars Andy Teh as Uncle Mike, alongside Idan Aedan, Nor Merah, and Umar Shakur as his sons. Directed by Ezrie Ghazali, known for his work on Kiblat ke Syurga, this film marks his feature debut.
Executive Producer Raja Jastina Raja Arshad said, “Uncle Mike’s journey is a testament to unity and acceptance. This story remained untold for 16 years, and now, we hope it inspires greater understanding among Malaysians.”
The celebration continues with programmatic trailers that combine cultural storytelling and Etika’s 7UP. The first trailer, Cat Hei Lam Mun (symbolizing seven joys), blends Chinese New Year festivities with 7UP’s uplifting essence. The Hari Raya trailer will follow, highlighting the shared joy of Ramadan and Hari Raya.
Amy Gan, VP of Marketing at Etika, shared, “For decades, our beverages have been part of festive moments. We celebrate Malaysia’s rich diversity through this film and trailers, connecting traditions with heartfelt storytelling.”
With its themes of love, family, and unity, Abah Saya, Uncle Mike promises to resonate deeply with audiences. The film is set to release later this year, celebrating a truly Malaysian story that bridges cultures and strengthens connections.
Will you be watching Abah Saya, Uncle Mike? I know I would.
